Most of us love to marvel at children's artwork. It is honest, charming, and even profound. We see the child's personality reflected in their creations. Around nine or ten years old, this enthusiasm often slows down. Children begin to judge their artwork, sometimes quite harshly, leading to disappointment and a loss of interest in developing their artistic skills.
In Russian academic art education, the curriculum begins right around that age — early ten years old. We encourage children not to judge their artwork too harshly, but rather to learn how to see better, guiding the development of technical skills, and helping them develop creativity so it doesn't die in the darkness of that internal judge.
This encouragement helps children to continue experimenting and developing their artistic skills. They learn to love the process and not be afraid of making mistakes, fostering a comprehensive approach to experimentation rather than just guessing, which is key for creative development in any field.
At Classical Art Education Center in Sherman Oaks, we provide this very kind of education, specifically designed for children. Our classes teach Russian Academic Drawing, Painting, and Creativity Development, helping children master techniques while always preserving their creative spirit.
